Why is having a certified guide important?

Akumal Bay is divided into red and green zones. Green is where anyone can swim with or without a guide and consists only of shallow water, perfect for wading in.

Red Zone is federally protected as it contains a delicate ecosystem of coral reef and seagrasses. This is where you are most likely to encounter marine animals. No one is allowed to enter the red zone without a government certified guide to protect you and the marine animals.
